Taking your kids horseback riding can be one of the most memorable and rewarding family adventures, especially when it takes place along the beautiful shores of Amelia Island. But a little planning goes a long way toward making the ride smooth, safe, and enjoyable for everyone.
Here are five helpful tips to ensure a perfect beach ride with your kids!
1) Double-Check Age and Height Requirements
Before booking, be sure your child meets the age and height guidelines. At Happy Trails Walking Horses, riders must be at least 13 years old and 4 feet tall. Tandem riding is not allowed for safety reasons, and we kindly ask that you do not misrepresent your child’s age. These policies are in place to protect your child, the horse, and all participants.
2) Choose the Right Time of Day
Kids tend to do best when they’re well-rested and not overheated. Consider booking a morning ride to avoid the midday heat and take in the peaceful atmosphere of the early beach hours. Sunset rides can also be a relaxing end to a day filled with activity.
3) Dress for the Ride
Make sure your child wears long pants and closed-toe shoes. Avoid sandals, dresses, or anything too loose. Helmets are provided, and a quick riding lesson will help them feel comfortable and confident before hitting the beach.
4) Talk About What to Expect
If your child has never ridden a horse before, talk them through what the ride will be like. Let them know they’ll be matched with a calm, well-trained Tennessee Walking Horse, known for its smooth gait and gentle temperament. First-time riders are welcome, and many of our guests are trying horseback riding for the very first time.
5) Make It a Lasting Memory
Bring a phone or camera to capture the moment, but make sure it’s secure during the ride. The ocean breeze, soft light, and stunning views make for unforgettable family photos.
